MEET THE FAMILY
Morningstar Farm is part of that ancient breed of agriculture called “The Family Farm”. While we now work with a fabulous team of people to accomplish all there is to do at the farm, we want to introduce you to the three generations at the centre of it all.
Clarke & Nancy Gourlay
The Whole idea was Nancy’s to start with, that’s why she’s the president! And Clarke is better at spending money, so he became the treasurer. There you have it” The founders (and owners) of Little Qualicum Cheeseworks Ltd. Now, thirteen years in the business, Nancy still consults on everything having to do with the making and packaging of cheese. Clarke oversees the farm and animal end of things, as well as sales and new ventures. Both are very hands-on, with Clarke still out milking cows, and Nancy still milling curds.
Ray & Judy Haynes (Nancy’s mom & dad)
Although officially retired, both are still actively involved in sales, farmer’s markets, festivals, deliveries and generally keeping the place up. In fact, Ray is known to frequently sell cheese in the lineup at the ferry terminal on the way home from markets!
Dorothy Gourlay (Clarke’s mom)
Dorothy’s main contribution has been on the advice front. She was also our first “cow owner” and has the distinction of being our best Farmgate Store customer! Clarke’s father John passed away in November 2012 after arranging for an addition on the farmhouse for his wife of 55 years. Dorothy now lives on the farm, is a welcome part of the gardening crew and is even closer to the store!
Raymond, John & Kevin Gourlay
All three boys are involved in various capacities in the family business, from cheese-making to marketing to herdsmanship. Kevin also runs a small business as a farrier (www.arrowsmithforgeandfarrier.com) and is in full time studies at a local university.
